i personaly like maple snares when im ordering but i will play what ever sounds good, as for size i perfure 14 inch colector snares because you can get that nice rage from high to low. i use evens power revece dot heads on my snares and keep them very tight.

I love the sound of a piccalo snare, but for some reason, when i play one, i feel limited on my music, sometimes it just wont flow with the sound of the snare, so, i prefer, a very nice high pitched snare that has a tin can sound to it after you hit it, and i like my heads to be very tight for that perfect action as if you were playing a marching snare. As far as heads, i really dont have a favortie, if i did, i would drive myself crazy, i like remo single ply cuz of the sound and the action you get, but i also like aquarian double ply because they last almost forever!

Question: I have this old Ludwig snare that I am trying to restore. I believe that it is 14' however, the drum head does not really fit it. Is this because older drums do not "seat" as easily? The head is too big for a 13' and too small for a 15,' so I am confused. I have never had this problem on the newer snare drums that I own. I measured the head with a ruler and it is about 14'.

Might be that the drum is warped or the rim is warped, i had that problem just a few months ago and had to replace my snare drum because i play alot of rim shots and i bent the rim to the point that the head no longer fit right on it.

I usually use the Sensitone that came with my set. Coated batter, Ambassador snare. Both tuned pretty tight. Although I lately I've been using one I don't know much about. Anyone ever heard of Bruno snares? I'm borrowing it from a friend but he doesn't know much about it either. I know that his dad used it with his Rodgers kit back in the 70's. It's steel 5x14. I put a Smooth white Ambassador on it and sounds amazing.

i love the sound of wood snare drum thats tuned up. to me it has a fuller sound than a metal snare drum.
heads depend on the type and thickness of the drum. for example i prefer a 1 ply on a piccolo drums and a 2 ply bigger drums. Also i like the ring of a snare drum some dont, i try to stay away from the controled center heads or putting moon gel on the snare drum.

snare drums are kind of like women...everybody has their own unique preferences...one of my most prized posessions is a 14x8 inch sonor bubinga wood snare I purchased on consignment at pro drum in hollywood. The drum is in amazing condition given that it is nearing 40 years old, and it is the most "musical" drum I have ever heard. Unlike many other snare drums I have played/owned, this drum permits so many different nuances and tones based on how hard and/or where you hit it.
I do have my eyes on purchasing one of the Pacific Drums Acrylic "Mud Flaps" in Green though...just because there is A LOT to be said about eye-candy gear when you are performing on stage!
when I was a teenager I "borrowed" one of my buddies 13 inch Pearl Export Tom Toms and put snares on it...I was trying to get the alex van halen snare sound and couldn't afford a deep enough drum brand new. I ended up creating an amazing sounding drum...recorded with it once (on a ballad tune where the backbeat came down like once every 20 seconds) and the engineers were jizzing over the fatness of the snare. Of course, when I gave the drum back it had a bunch of crooked holes in the shell from where I drilled it to mount the snares, but I think the dude got over it (famous funk drummer now).
the best snare drum you can ever own is the drum that you can't stop thinking about hitting....the drum that makes you want to play play play
drummers hit things, and in doing so they entertain people

to tell everyone the truth, I don't have a certain sound to set my snare drum, as long as it sounds nice and clean.

Hmm, I have the regular CX snare from pdp, I just replaced the heads with a emperor coated top and hazy single bottom, I crank up the bottom about 1 or 1/2 turns compared to the top, I like high pitched noises since it matches with my toms and it sound bright and ringy

I love my 13" PDP Steel Piccolo When you apply a Remo Coated Emporer w/ power dot on top and a single ply Ambassador on bottem, the drum is almost like proof of God! There's a nice solid, high pitch crack that coinsides with a minor sustain. Mmmm...beautiful! My uncle has a solid maple snare by Ayotte that has a great deep sound to it. I may have to "borrow" it from him sometime!

you know i have always wondered about that head. i figured since it was so thick that it would sound good, but it sounds like you can crank on yours and get a great sound out of it.
